Grammar Magic

This section is for the language learners that want to know all the different parts to Lemmatize's grammar magic! Lemmatize does the following for all languages, with additional language-specific features being detailed on the Languages page:

• Lemmatization
  • Technical term that means figuring out the root word for a given word (e.g. the root word of 'eaten' is 'eat')
  • Allows accurate highlighting of word knowledge while reading, since words you haven't seen before but whose root words you know are highlighted correctly
  • Reduces work while reading since, once you add a word to your collection, any forms of that word get added too
  • Results in an accurate count of how many words you know in a language
  • Improves flashcards since you might see a different sentence and conjugation of a given root word every time you study it with flashcards. Say goodbye to rote memorization, and hello to natural language learning!
• Part of Speech Detection
  • Improves translations and flashcards since Lemmatize can tell the difference between words such as water (the noun) and water (the verb)
  • Prevents proper nouns from being marked as words that need to be learned, and prevents them from appearing as multiple choice options for flashcards
• Sentence Boundary Detection
  • Results in flashcards that start and end naturally, rather than in the middle of a sentence
  • Enables even more advanced grammar analysis, like separable verb detection in German
• Word Classification
  • Using the part of speech and lemma (root word) allows Lemmatize to figure out the conjugation or declension of a word
  • Improves flashcards since all of the multiple choice options will grammatically fit into the sentence. You can only get the flashcard right if you actually know the word!
• Contraction and Obsolete Spelling Detection
